7, 5, 3 years old children

The ceremony is held annually on November 15th. However, it is commonly practiced on the weekends close to this date.

Children who become 3, 5, and 7 years old, anytime during the current calendar year, are blessed by a Shinto priest. The priest prays for the child’s continued good health and growth. The ceremony is a celebration and is viewed as a rite of passage from early childhood into middle childhood.

  1. Why 7, 5, and 3 years old?

This ceremony is based on 3 rituals, Kamioki, Hakamagi and Obitoki, which were held in ancient times.

Kamioki - 3-year-old children were allowed to grow their hair out.

Hakamagi - 5-year-old boys were allowed to change from children’s clothing to adult-style clothing (hakama).

Obitoki - 7-year-old girls were allowed to change the simple cords on their kimono to a traditional belt (obi).

Although the rituals are no longer practiced, the rite of passage is still widely accepted in Japan
